Quarterly Reports

August 2005

Dear Members,

I would like to take this opportunity to advise the membership and other interested parties in the activities that are taking place in IPDR.org. We have had a busy year with two very important liaison relationships; one being the our long standing ATIS relationship and the second being our joint work with CableLabs. These two initiatives have been instrumental in gaining industry acceptance and adoption of the IPDR.org protocol and services. I want to thank Steve Cotton, Ken Sarno, Tal Givoly, Betty Cockrell, Amit Kleinmann, and Kevin McCoy for all of their hard work in furthering these relationships to the extent they are now functioning.

IPDR.org has been participating in two principal activities in ATIS (www.atis.org):

  • The VoIP working group, formed to identify issues and concerns regarding the impact of VoIP services on the OBF, and
  • The TMOC-AIP (http://www.atis.org/0130/aip.asp) joint working group to develop an American National Standard and an ITU-T submission specifying a protocol to support accounting for VoIP.

Progress:

A white paper was developed outlining the various call flows involving VoIP, and IPDR.org also submitted the IPDR Supplier/Partner Settlement (S/PS) Business Solution document for consideration by OBF. At OBF#91 in Scottsdale, the S/PS was presented at a workshop intended to result in action, if appropriate. The positive outcome of that workshop was that an ATIS Issue statement was approved to develop a full set of OBF business practices, based on S/PS and to ask TMOC to forward the result to ITU-T for consideration as an international standard. The white paper can be downloaded from the IPDR.org web site at http://www.ipdr.org/documents/IPDR-SP_White_Paper.pdf

The working group has a final draft of a requirements definition document that, when approved, will become ATIS Standard ATIS-0300075. The working group also has in final draft form a ballot draft for a Trial Use American National Standard for a protocol specification directly based on IPDR.org’s IPDR/SP, IPDR/XDR, and IPDR/File. Further, the latest draft of this document was presented to the ITU-T Next Generation Network Management Focus Group at their meeting in Montreal and they are including it in the technologies being considered for the NGN roadmap they are developing.

The CableLabs relationship has already proven a successful one with the inclusion of IPDR.org Streaming Protocol as a mandatory required feature in the CableLabs DOCSIS 2.0 specifications. Additional efforts are currently underway to work with CableLabs on upcoming specifications. IPDR.org is excited to be participating in a CableLabs workshop that is scheduled for August 17 at Keystone Resort, Colorado after CableLabs® Summer Conference 2005. The workshop will allow IPDR.org protocol to be communicated to many of CableLabs service providers and vendors.

In addition to the industry liaison work there are two new large work initiatives being presented to the IPDR.org Business Requirements group. One subgroup of this working group will concentrate on Supplier/Partner Settlement and among other projects, will support and give a submission to the new ATIS issue. A kickoff meeting is being planned for the week of August 22. Please contact Kelly Anderson (kanderson@ipdr.org) or Betty Cockrell (betty.cockrell@billingconcepts.com) if you are interested in contributing to this group.

A second subgroup will concentrate on the accounting and settlement for IPTV services. This group will be defining accounting and settlement scenarios and requirements for IP TV and Video services, liaison with other industry groups, and submit specifications for standardization. The IPTV Interoperability Forum (IIF) was formed last month under the ATIS umbrella to address an industry overall reference architecture and assessment of IPTV issues. Currently IPDR.org is well-positioned to offer support in this effort. The kickoff meeting will be the week of August 29, and IPDR.org will be soliciting participation from industry leaders in the IPTV area. Please contact Kelly Anderson (kanderson@ipdr.org) if you are interested in contributing to this group.

Details for the next IPDR.org membership meeting are currently being discussed. The format of the meeting will be altered from previous meetings to include guest speakers and discussion topics led by industry experts. The date and agenda of the meeting will be finalized over the next few weeks, and a meeting notice will be sent to the membership at that time.

IPDR.org would like to thank you for your continued support. The Board of Directors, as well as the staff are excited about the work and progress of the IPDR Organization this year, and are looking forward to an increased level of exposure and adoption of our work into 2006.

Best Regards,
Kelly Anderson
President/COO IPDR.org
